About Ama
Ama R. Saran, PhD, MSW My commitment to community is my mission. . . Northern-born, primarily southern-reared, now residing in the deliciousness of coastal South Carolina’s Gullah Geechee Cultural Corridor, I am stepping and hard on 78’s dress tail. My life is mercifully synched in a goodness-of-fit with my work as thought-partner in community organizing, non-profit organizational development, social science research, and always teaching and training. And now at this moment, this epoch of lost and found, prayerfully post-COVID, war and wondering I write and create social welfare interventions that coalesce and focus on issue-organizing, daily, picking my way through the detritus of decades, the dust of decisions made well but still gone awry, too many farewells to irreplaceable friends, the necessary reflections on chance and courage, and life events that either shaped or mauled me as a member of the cadres of the still-standing. Life’s sometimes terrible but nonetheless fruitful terrain has cultivated a constant and acute social/political/cultural consciousness operating as my guidance system for working at the nexus of social welfare and public health. I now add to this writer as I have declared that’s what I must do to net narratives of my own and harness hordes of others. Therefore, I’m working on a series of connected essays emerging from observations and interviews of people who lost loved ones and their own way of life during the pandemic. This is what I woulda’ cooked if I coulda’ seen you home: Grits and Grief, Rice and Rituals relates to the massive bottling of grief experienced through the loss of commonly shared homegoing rituals, the interruption of end things most of us desire. So I open up the pages of the current me by rifling through varied roles and accomplishments inclusive of: with an interdisciplinary doctorate in the macro side of social welfare a decade plus of work as adjunct faculty, University of California’s School of Social Work, Herstory Writers’ Network, associate director and now consultant for Herstory in Southern Sun. I have conducted COVID and post-COVID research among older Gullah women through my Brandeis University’s Women’s Studies Research Center Fellowship, organizing for voting rights and education with the Good Trouble Collaborative and as a board member with the Health and Wellness clinics of Georgetown County most recently and the Mitney Project. Earlier on I served in a mix of roles that further curated my learnings, skills and assets in a rich mix of work settings inclusive of the Black Women’s Health Imperative, The Names Project where I co-created, Call My Name to enhance the engagement of people of color, consultations with the Cambridge-based Environment and Health group creating text messages for HIV/AIDS medication adherence for people of color, Smithsonian’s Folklife Festival, SisterSong International reproductive justice, documentary filmmaking, On Becoming a Woman for Black Women’s Health Imperative, workplace literacy programming at Georgia State University, and LGBTQ rights and advocacy with Southerners On New Ground (SONG). As the first program director for HumanitiesDC I was ushered into the world of community philanthropy and continued that work in a variety of consulting roles with the Ford Foundation, Ms. Foundation and Kellogg among them. These are but a few of my roles in the course of 50 years of community and self-help organizing, public health advocacy and now community writing among dozens of other endeavors. My long life has granted me a longer, deeper look into all that I have done, but far more than that, all that remains, and I stand ready.

Teaching is at the very core of my DNA having emerged from five generations of teachers, educational administrators and trainers. My best teaching emerges when working with adults building greater intellectual strengths even as we build your intellectual capacities. Having taught in diverse settings from pre-school to doctoral programs I most love working with adult learners finishing a long-neglected degree or just working to acquire English, reading proficiency or basic literacy for these challenging times. A typical lesson for me is always comprised of first inquiring about you the person, reviewing work already produced, using case studies to bolster your capacity for critical analysis and problem-solving all within the context of the discipline studied.
