About David
Seven years ago, I finished my integrated chemistry masters degree at the University of Bristol for which I was awarded a first class with honours. I have specialised in organic chemistry whilst nurturing my strong interest in pure and applied mathematics. I have also now finished my PhD in chemical synthesis at the Bristol Synthetic Chemistry CDT where I have been working on a molecular telephone wire that can bind to DNA and communicate information about it on the nanometre scale. After my PhD, I took up a 2.5-year postdoctoral research position investigating other nanomachinery and molecular topology. Having immersed myself in the chemical sciences with great enthusiasm for the past eight years, I believe I have a solid foundation for tutoring the sciences and maths.

I have been a private tutor for seven years now and have improved the grades of nine tutees from B/C to A/A* standard for GCSE/A-Level. For part of my masters project and throughout my PhD and postdoc I have worked for high-performance research groups that have necessitated my presentation to be articulate, concise, and easy to understand. I believe that fundamental understanding of concepts can allow students to extrapolate to more complex concepts with sufficient guidance. My plan is for my lessons to test many instances of the concepts I will teach to instil confidence in the tutee, and to later see if they can extrapolate information from the concept and speculate upon more difficult problems. It is this sort of technique that helps my tutees think outside the box. I also plan for these problems to be slightly harder than is expected in exams so that the tutee is more than confident about tackling the problems that will be presented in the real test. I also strongly advocate the use of acronyms and abbreviations that can be used to recall vast amounts of trivial facts that inevitably come up in exams as they have served me extremely well over the years.
