About Patrick
I have a PhD in synthetic chemistry from the University of Bristol and am passionate about making complex scientific concepts clear and engaging. I worked as a teaching assistant in undergraduate labs for two years and enjoyed my time explaining science; I can help students develop a deep understanding of science while building their confidence. My lessons are flexible and aimed at those struggling with concepts and ideas. I am a big believer in learning by analogy and always attempt to explain complex or unfamiliar ideas with real-world examples. Generally, I aim to start lessons with a quick warm-up quiz on a topic to gain an understanding of the student's knowledge, then follow up with in-depth discussion of any ideas or points that present an issue. If appropriate, I like to finish lessons with exam-style questions to work through. I have experience teaching undergraduate students during my doctorate, and school-age pupils as a voluntary tutor during the pandemic. I am happy to take on students of any ability, whether they are those looking to push into the top grades, or those looking to pass in GCSE or A level.
