About Chris
Hi, my name's Chris! I'm a twenty-five year old PhD candidate at the University of St Andrews studying twentieth-century English literature. I am originally from the United States, but moved to Scotland last September for school. I've always loved teaching, especially one-on-one, where we can form a close relationship so I can help you learn better. My hobbies, outside of constant reading and writing, are mostly musical (I play five instruments); but, I also love playing video games and hiking.

The lesson:
Over 3+ years of teaching both in front of a classroom and one-on-one, I've learned that teachers and tutors need to start with what students know and what students care about and proceed from there. Lessons are student-focused and will usually last an hour, but can run longer. I am most comfortable teaching secondary-school or post-secondary students, but can work with younger students.
Experience:
One of my two undergraduate degrees was in adolescent education, so I've had four years of educational theory, as well as one year as a secondary-school college-prep English teacher. In that time, I devised lessons for 120 students daily, with a range of reading and writing activities designed to help students pass standardized tests. After that, I held a position as a university lecturer alongside my MA, in which I taught roughly twenty students per term how to write formal essays to a high standard set by the university. In addition to teaching, I also worked as assistant director of the university writing center, which offered all graduate and undergraduate students one-on-one support in both formal and informal writing tasks. Here, I also worked with several non-traditional students, like English Language Learners and refugee students.
