About Saran

I am a BA Honours Arts graduate, and PhD Confirmed Candidate majoring in the field of English Literature at the University of Queensland. During my five years at UQ I have tutored classes of between five to twenty undergraduate students, edited and consulted postgraduate students on their research, and participated in group workshops where I was required to set the agenda, drive discussion, and editing fellow student's work.

All students whose work I have directly editing has passed their subject with at least a 80% grading rate, while I have been told that my method of teaching is engaging, fun, and capable of making potentially disinteresting topics interesting.

My teaching style is to work in tandem with a student on whichever piece of homework or assignment they have to complete. A student will explain their immediate focus, together we will run over what it is that the student needs to achieve in our tutoring session, devise a academic checklist of what their assignment/homework needs to address, and then together we will work to complete this checklist.

Additionally, I will edit and provide feedback on any work a student performs outside of tutoring hours, should they wish to email me.

My teaching philosophy is centred on the establishment of a relaxed, affable, and collaborative relationship between my student and myself. My role as a tutor is not to lecture, criticise, or complete a student's work myself; rather I believe in letting a student work, editing this work, recognising the errors in their written work, and explaining these errors to students. Be these errors grammatical, structural, or argumentative, I aim to educate my student's to understand their errors, understand how they can remedy them, and then allow them to try again. This is my teaching style, I explain what a student needs to do to improve their work, and then allow the student to attempt to improve their work themselves. This not only educates student's as to basic grammar, sentence structure, and writing conventions, but ensures that eventually the student will be able to permanently eradicate these errors from their writing altogether.

I am also a fierce believer that a student's grasp of English, grammar, and writing can be improved through diverse reading. As such, part of my teaching style is to devise a fun, engaging, and educational reading list with a student, focusing on a topic they enjoy. This reading list will not only expose a student to different writing styles, but will also aid in expanding their vocabulary, sentence structures, and written expression.
