About Alissa

My #1 goal is to have fun and instill a love of learning! I am skilled at helping students overcome learning barriers, based on years of researching evidence-based instructional models to make learning fun, relevant, and accessible. I have experience as a math tutor for students between the ages of 3 and 18. I graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance, with a minor in Applied Mathematics. My interdisciplinary educational background has blessed me with original perspectives on teaching and the knowledge to tutor a wide variety of subjects.

About the lesson

At the first (free!) session, we will diagnose where the student is at currently, where they wish to be, and what academic needs are not being met. Students seeking a more enriching math curriculum will be challenged through inquiry, projects, and games designed to reinforce critical thinking skills. I inject logic-based principles into my teaching, which encourage students to be analytical, creative, and successful communicators.

For students who struggle with understanding math concepts as they are taught in the classroom, I employ research-backed instructional frameworks like Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to "re-teach" concepts. This method is particularly effective for students with autism, ADHD, or specific learning disabilities. I especially focus on practical applications from science or everyday life to make learning more meaningful and reinforce problem-solving skills.

For students who struggle with task completion and low motivation, we will work on organizational and executive function skills. Students will develop long-term independence and learn to set/achieve their own goals.

For students who struggle with performance, we will employ evidence-based problem-solving and error-checking strategies. This is especially needed in students with ADHD or dyscalculia. Students will recognize how to self-regulate and gain confidence in their math abilities.

Perfect! Alissa was wonderful from the beginning! She answered promptly and we were able to schedule the first class the same day. She is patient and calm and truly cares for the kiddos' success.
