About Marguerite J

A Little About Me

I grew up in Quebec with a French-Canadian mother and an American father, so I was exposed to both French and English from an early age. I completed my primary education in French and my secondary education in English here in Quebec, Canada.

My love of languages started when I was young. I began studying Spanish at 13, and it quickly became a passion. I later had the opportunity to experience language learning abroad. At 17, I spent the summer in Quito, Ecuador, studying Spanish with EF. At 21, I spent the summer in Rome, Italy, studying Italian with EF, and at 22, I spent the summer in Guadalajara, Mexico, through a Spanish language program at the University of Guadalajara.

Because I have been a language student myself, I know firsthand what it feels like to learn a new language, practice speaking, make mistakes, and build confidence. I also learned what teaching approaches worked for me—and what didn’t. I understand the experience from the student’s perspective, not just the tutor’s.

I then moved to the United Kingdom for university, where I studied Literature and Modern Languages, specializing in Spanish with a minor in Italian.

During my four years at university, I was a French conversation tutor, helping students develop their confidence speaking French. I also created and ran a Spanish Travel Circle for people who wanted to learn basic, practical Spanish before traveling. I loved helping people learn language in a way that was useful, relaxed, and connected to their real-life goals.

For the past 15 years, I have worked in property management and real estate, where communication has always been a huge part of my work. For the past 2.5 years, I have also been running my own small consulting business, giving me extensive experience in professional communication, client relations, problem-solving, and adapting the way I communicate to different people and situations.

Today, I bring all of these experiences together in my English lessons. I believe learning a language isn’t just about grammar—it is about being able to communicate, express yourself, understand others, and feel confident using the language in real life.

About the lesson

Personalized English Lessons That Are Built Around You

Learning English should be practical, interesting, and connected to your real life. My lessons are personalized to your needs, your interests, and your goals—whether you want to feel more confident at work, communicate more easily in everyday life, travel comfortably, or simply improve your English for yourself.

I speak French and Spanish, so I can also help French- and Spanish-speaking students understand English more easily and overcome common language barriers.

How My Lessons Work

Each lesson is divided into three parts, with a little preparation before each class.

1. Reading & Pronunciation
We read a text related to the topic you have chosen. We work on pronunciation, vocabulary, and comprehension, followed by questions and conversation about the reading.

2. Your Personal Dictionary
At the end of each lesson, we choose a topic for the following week. Before your next class, you prepare a list of 20 English words related to that topic.

During the lesson, we go through your words together—looking at their meaning, pronunciation, and how to use them naturally in a sentence. Over time, you build your own personal English dictionary based on subjects that actually interest you.

3. Speaking & Conversation
The final part focuses on speaking and expressing yourself in English. Depending on your goals, you can either prepare a short oral presentation about your chosen topic or watch a video and discuss it with me.

If you choose a presentation, you write it out beforehand. I correct your written English first, then help you improve your pronunciation, vocabulary, and ability to communicate your ideas naturally when speaking.

I believe you learn better when you’re genuinely interested in what you’re learning. You choose the subjects that interest you, and I build the lessons around them.

My goal is not simply to teach you English—it is to help you understand, speak, and use English with confidence in real-life situations.
