About Richard

I am an experienced and fully qualified practising teacher, with a full enhanced DBS. Please note that a DBS is required by law in the UK if you are teaching children more than 3 times a month, either face to face or online. This checks the criminal records database for any cautions or convictions and is updated every year. This can be checked online at any time. I also have a degree in Chemical Engineering from Leeds University. I have run my own businesses in the UK and spent 10 years working in Dubai. I have a wealth of life experiences and can draw on many anecdotes to make my lessons particularly interesting. I have been teaching since 2010 and I teach from year 7 to year 13 at all levels. I have undergone and passed the UK's QTS, (Qualified Teacher Status) training, which involves a postgraduate course of 1 year at Canterbury University. It is here that you learn how to teach, assess and monitor progress by spending time at schools and at the University. Just because you know your subject it doesn't necessarily mean you know how to teach it. This is a skill that needs to be taught and honed with experience and constant updating with new techniques and knowledge. What are my hobbies? Where do I start! One of my main hobbies is as an amateur magician and I will often share some of my phenomenal magic tricks with my students if they are interested. I do this currently in schools where I teach and get a great response from the students. I am also a Grade VIII classical pianist, a top-level chess player and I love to play tennis and table tennis.

About the lesson

I am an experienced and fully qualified active teacher, with a full enhanced DBS. I have been teaching since 2010. I teach from year 7 to year 13 at all levels. All my lessons are conducted live and online, using the Zoom platform and last 50 minutes. During each lesson I recap on the last lesson and make sure the understanding is still there. Then we look at another topic and go through this and test at the end with some exam questions. I make sure that learning is assessed along the way and that no areas are missed. The topic could be what is being learnt at school at the moment, or we can go a step ahead so the student is already familiar with what is to come in the next few lessons at school. I will be giving exam technique advice, making sure the basics are understood, giving useful acronyms and tips on how to revise. This is possible as I have taught all the exam syllabuses relevant to the UK in England, Scotland and Wales, as each nation has different content and exam procedures. Each lesson is usually equivalent to around 3 hours in a classroom.

Before I had lessons with Richard I was failing maths and science. In both subjects I got a U despite being predicted 5 and 6s. Now after exams I am confident in passing both subjects with at least my expected grades and Richard has played a big role in this by always making sure I fully understand every topic.
