About Jill

I am an industrial engineering student at Penn State University finishing my first year. Currently, I maintain a 4.0 GPA while serving as a Learning Assistant for Math 140 (Calc 1). I facilitate large group learning in a classroom setting (about twenty students) as well as individualized tutoring during my evening hours (about two or three students). I have also received special instruction on principles and strategies for effective stem learning through various courses. Although I am a college student and do not have a teaching degree, I believe that I easily recognize the best ways to present material to new learners.

About the lesson

I’m Jill! I am an industrial engineering student at Penn State University Park, finishing my first year. Currently, I am a Learning Assistant for Math 140 (Calc 1). I facilitate large group learning in a classroom setting (about twenty students) as well as individualized tutoring during my evening hours (about two or three students). I have also received special instruction on principles and strategies for effective stem learning through various courses.

During tutoring sessions, I often start with mini “warm ups” where I gauge a student’s level with a specific topic before diving into the lesson plan. At the end of the session, I leave enough time for students to practice problems on their own. When the students practice problems, they experience “productive struggle” where they learn at their own pace and can easily ask any questions. I have taken numerous math courses, both throughout high school and at the college level. I recognize how difficult it can be to learn material for the first time. I bring this attitude with me when I tutor and tailor my approach towards students seeing new material. However, I also have significant experience tutoring students taking Calc 1 for the second or third time and can adapt my strategy to support any level of exposure.

I want to help students better understand math by presenting material with a different perspective than their professors and teachers! I am excited to teach multiple levels of math, including elementary math, middle school math, algebra, pre-calculus, and calculus. Additionally, I am always looking to improve my tutoring skills and welcome any feedback from students or parents. I respond to messages quickly and am easy to reach!
