About Michael

Hi! I’m Michael Martinez, a laid-back and passionate music teacher who’s been helping students of all ages enjoy playing music since 2018. I offer lessons in piano, guitar, drums, ukulele, and bass, and I specialize in creating a relaxed, stress-free learning environment where students feel confident and inspired to grow. My approach is all about keeping things fun, flexible, and tailored to each student’s interests. Whether we’re diving into pop songs, building foundational skills with method books, or exploring music through YouTube and Spotify, I focus on sparking curiosity and making sure every student leaves our lesson feeling excited to play more. I’ve worked with students from age 6 to 70, and I especially love working with kids—but I’m always excited to connect with adult learners too. My goal is to equip you with the tools and encouragement you need to enjoy music for life. Whether you're a complete beginner or picking things back up after a break, I’m here to support you every step of the way. Let’s make music something you look forward to every week!

1. Teaching Philosophy

Music should be enjoyable, personal, and pressure-free.

Confidence and interest come first—technical skills follow more naturally when a student feels motivated and supported.

Everyone can succeed in music with the right encouragement and approach, regardless of age or experience level.

2. Atmosphere & Vibe

Laid-back, patient, and friendly.

Lessons feel more like a fun hangout with purpose, rather than a rigid classroom.

Emphasis on relationship-building to foster trust and motivation.

3. Customization & Flexibility

Lessons are tailored to each student’s interests, skill level, and pace.

Open to spontaneous changes in lesson direction to keep things fresh and engaging.

Adjusts methods based on what keeps a student excited—whether that’s pop songs, improvisation, or structured exercises.

4. Tools & Resources

Uses method books like Faber for piano when appropriate.

Incorporates flash cards, Spotify playlists, YouTube videos, and music apps.

Encourages students to bring in songs they love or are curious about.

5. Musical Focus

Strong preference for teaching pop music, though comfortable with many styles.

Supports creativity, ear training, and practical music-making alongside technique.

Repertoire building is prioritized as a measure of progress and personal satisfaction.

6. Progress Tracking

Tracks development through method books, song mastery, and student feedback.

Avoids rigid grading—progress is measured by growth in confidence, consistency, and enjoyment.

7. Student Demographics

Teaches ages 6 to 70.

Especially skilled at teaching children with patience and encouragement.

Actively welcoming to adult beginners or those returning to music.
