About Paul

Hi, my name is Paul. I aim to make learning Astronomy fun and rewarding. It's also about giving you the tools and knowledge to help you get outside under the stars and start doing some real, practical Astronomy as quickly as possible and/or helping you through the GCSE if you are going down that route. I have been teaching Astronomy (both introductory and intermediate) since 1999 with the last 15 years specializing in teaching GCSE. I teach both privately and for Adult Education Services as well as giving one-off talks to various societies and groups. I have been passionately interested in the subject since I was 8 years old and I am currently working towards a degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics. I hold a Certificate in Astronomy and Planetary Science from the Open University and a Certificate of Professional Development in Teaching Astronomy from John Moores University Liverpool and of course, many years of practical experience and subject knowledge! I also offer Maths and Physics support to GCSE level if required. My day job is in I.T as a Business Intelligence Developer and SQL Server Database Administrator.

About the lesson

I try to make my classes as engaging as possible using various media. I'm a great believer in hands-on astronomy so my lessons include many demos and post-lesson activities so that the student can put what they learn into practice. I also advocate that the students can email me anytime when they have a question so that they don't feel that they are restricted to just the session time.

I booked 8 lessons with Paul and I find him an expert in his subject. Secondly his way of teaching is exemplary. He always try to read the kids mind and try to come at students level. My son said he helped to covered my gaps very nicely.

Mr. Paul Shephard taught a course I enrolled in two years ago. I was a complete novice to the subject, indeed I went along initially to support shy friend! However I found the course fascinating, due in no small part to Mr. Shephards' engaging and measured teaching skills. It is obvious that he has real passion for his subject, and the class found this infectious. I would highly recommend him as a tutor. I am a nurse tutor myself, and have experience in teaching.
