About Ethan

A little bit about me! I have just finished my A level exams, achieving 4 A*s. This means I have an extremely detailed knowledge of the requirements of the modern day exam, a huge advantage compared to older teachers who may not be used to the new specification which was introduced in 2018. As well as this, I taught myself the entirety of A level French without any support from teachers as my sixth-form did not run the course! As a result, I have put in place for myself several teaching methods which helped to secure my A* and hence guarantee success. These methods can easily be passed on to my students.

Outside of studies I am a high level Triathlete, competing across the UK as part of the national talent pathway as well as being a member of the prestigious Yorkshire Triathlon Academy. Combining 20+ hour training weeks with successful studies means I am very familiar with efficient learning techniques, ensuring the sessions with my students get the best results in the shortest space of time.

In September I will begin an Economics and Modern Foreign Languages degree at the University of Leeds, whilst continuing to tutor my French and Spanish students to help them achieve their best possible grades at GCSE and A level.

About the lesson

My principal objective as a French and Spanish tutor is to ensure that my students achieve the highest grade that they are capable of. My teaching philosophy to ensure this is the case involves:
-In depth exam technique sessions for all major UK examination boards. Most students do not posses the specific exam knowledge required to score highly in translations, writing, and speaking exams (regardless of their actual language ability!). Mastering this via the guided study of mark schemes and examiner reports acts as an extremely effective grade booster, and puts you ahead of the competition!

-A huge emphasis on vocabulary learning via personalised activities to maximise the enjoyment of language learning whilst remaining specific to the requirements of the exam. This could include a reading comprehension on a recent Spanish football match, or studying the lyrics of a popular French song. Acquiring a wide range of vocabulary is essential for students to express themselves effectively and gain full marks on Speaking and Writing exams. For students studying A level, this can be tailored towards the theme of their independent research project to ensure specific terms are used to impress the examiners!

-Accompanying vocabulary learning with a perfect understanding of grammar is the final piece of the puzzle. Large class sizes often neglect individual questions to do with tenses, verb conjugation as well as the use of the subjunctive. In reality, with one-to-one attention, the concept of mastering the language's grammar is not out of the reach of any student. This will increase spontaneity of responses during the speaking exam, as well as boosting accuracy marks across all the papers. Once again, this gives you a huge advantage compared to the students across the country sitting the same paper!

-Lessons will typically be 1 hour long for both GCSE and A level students.
