About Alexander
I am a graduate of Oxford University (Classics - 2.1), currently working independently as a strategy consultant. I have tutored whenever possible for the past 9 years and have experience tutoring a range of academic subjects at various levels. I have also given interview coaching for Oxbridge entry with excellent results. In addition to my own academic track record (won a scholarship aged 12, top grades at GCSE and A-Level, Oxford degree - 2.1), my professional life away from education has equipped me with valuable tools and a breadth of knowledge that is beneficial to more advanced students interested in the real world implications of their studies. This real world experience also helps me to connect with younger students searching for a way to engage with ideas that can seem troublingly abstract in the classroom. Additionally, I spent several months in 2015 coaching at a top London prep school, which helped refine my ability to engage students at the 8+ to 13+ level.

My approach to tutoring is based on my own intense innate curiosity, and supplemented by my extroverted and open-minded nature. I am a committed adherent to the idea that knowledge is more eagerly sought and better absorbed when it is both fully contextualised and its relevance to the real world is understood. I am very much aware of how easy it is for students to become overwhelmed by the burden of academic expectations, especially having experienced highly competitive and pressured academic environments myself, all the way up to my time studying at Oxford. In these cases, passion for learning for its own sake is easily lost. My belief, based on considerable experience, is that a teaching method based around discussion and focused on putting subject matter in context is strongly preferable; I have found this approach enormously effective in helping students to discover both their passion for academic material and their conviction that they can achieve highly while enjoying their work. My professional background is particularly helpful when it comes to exploring practical applications and implications of subject matter. Importantly, I always aim to address topics and grapple with difficult concepts collaboratively, taking a more patient and imaginative approach than is usually possible at school, and one designed to be far more engaging than simple rote learning. Subjects tutored: I will prepare students for all subjects up to 13+; for Maths, English and humanities up to GCSE; for humanities including Classics up to undergraduate level. Qualifications I prepare students for: - 8+ - 11+ - 13+ - GCSEs - AS Levels - A Levels - Undergraduate degrees Locations: I am generally happy to teach or meet across most of London or online, but if travel costs over £5 or takes more than 30 minutes, I will ask for the extra costs to be met or for a percentage of the hourly fee as appropriate.
