About Stuart
I am a finance & tech entrepreneur, and tutor alongside running my business. I have a master's degree in Maths & Philosophy (1st class from Oxford University). I also have a professional background in actuarial science and statistical analysis.
I am able to teach to a very advanced level, but am also happy to take on tutees who are a bit younger or who may be struggling - by sharing my passion and focussing on their mindset and approach, rather than just the material the need to know, I hope I can help change the way they think about the subject and put them on the right track!
In terms of university/post grad level teaching, I am most comfortable with:
- Logic(s) (including propositional/CSL, predicate, modal, intuitionist, etc...basically any course with 'logic' in the title should be OK)
- Set Theory
- Financial Maths/Actuarial science
- Statistics (depending on how advanced the course is)
and, with a bit of prep, could also do:
- Analytic topology
- Linear algebra
- Real or complex analysis
- Galois Theory
- Group Theory
- Field Theory

Every person is different, so I start by getting to know my tutees, what their interests are, how they think, and what motivates them. This allows me to adapt the material to their learning style.
Contrary to popular belief, Maths is a very creative subject, and there are a lot of different ways of approaching the same question. I encourage students to try new things and not to worry about getting it wrong - that is all part of the learning process. Building their confidence and allowing them to do things the way that comes naturally to them can change their whole outlook on the subject, and make it much more engaging and interesting.
I also think that a lot of the beauty of any subject is lost when one just focuses on how to answer exam questions. By taking the time to nurture a deeper understanding of the subject, and teaching student how to work through questions they don't immediately know how to answer, I hope to spark a real interest in the subject. This not only improves students' abilities in the long-term, but can also improve short-term results, since studying become a matter of interesting puzzle-solving, rather than tedious memorising of facts and formulae.

Perfect! Stu is GREAT! He really knows how to adapt his tutoring approach to a student's specific needs, makes himself readily available to answer questions and is a joy to work with. His passion is contagious!
Perfect! Stu was an incredible help tutoring me for university level logic. I missed three weeks of tutorials due to covid and Stu helped me catch up. He was also incredibly attentive and flexible.
- Maria was a pleasure to teach. She really engaged with the material in our lessons, worked hard in between classes, and was able to wrap her head around some pretty difficult concepts very quickly.Stuart's response :
