About Maria

Hi, I'm Maria, an Oxford graduate in English and Modern Languages (French).

I've been teaching for seven years, working with pupils from primary age through to A-Level. I prepare children for 11+ and private school entrance exams, and I coach GCSE and A-Level students in English and French, both subjects in which I achieved A* myself. I've taught one-to-one and in classes of up to twenty, and I keep parents closely informed of each student's progress.

For four summers, I also lived with a family as a live-in tutor, supporting a very able boy from prep school through 11+ preparation and into Years 7 and 8.

My lessons are structured but warm, with reading and writing that are as enjoyable as they are rigorous. My aim is for every student to leave more confident, and a little more in love with words.

About the lesson

I am an experienced English and French Tutor with an in-depth understanding of set texts, essay structures, and what changes, big or small, students can make to push them over grade boundaries and straight to their dream grade. I am passionate about literature, and whether or not my students share this when we begin our lessons, I find ways of making the subject personally interesting for them, because while there are skills to be mastered in analysing and writing, there is no one way of approaching literature, and I want for all my students to find what fascinates them! I have 7 years of experience as an 11+ tutor, 5 as a GCSE tutor and 4 as an A-Level tutor. I am also keen to help University students looking to improve dissertations and other extended essays.
