About Allyson

I'm a 25 year old DPhil Student at the University of Oxford originally from St. Johns, Newfoundland in Canada. I am currently in the second year of my programme. My research focuses on enslavement in the work of Euripides. I have been teaching Latin and Greek for the past 4 years at the university level, at the University of Waterloo in Canada, I taught Latin 101 and 102, Greek 101 and 102, and gave many guest lectures on Greek tragedy and Classical civilisation. Since coming to Oxford I have taught reading classes on Euripides' Bacchae as well as MILC (Mods Intercollegiate Language Classes) classes for the department of Classics. My goal as a tutor is to make it so that students are invested in their own success and feel they are making consistent progress. My lesson plans and teaching methods conform to what works best for the individual. I enjoy jointly setting reading goals with my students, particularly if they have a particular work they would like to read in the original language!

About the lesson

My typical lesson length is 1 hour, and mostly online, although I can take face-to-face students in the Oxford area. My language classes consist of a focus on grammar as well as reading fluidly and without heavy use of resources. I tend to conform my teaching style to what each student responds to best, but always combining an academically rigorous approach with enthusiasm and fun, ensuring the best outcome. Our first session, free of charge, will start with a discussion of where you are with the language currently, and where you would like to end up, so I can work out the most appropriate plan to help you achieve your desired results. I take a personalised approach to lessons, depending on your level and goals. I am available for Common Entrance, Scholarship exams, GCSE, A-Level, etc as well as those who are self-teaching. I also offer Oxbridge interview prep. I have extensive experience with students who do not have a strong Greek or Latin background and can provide primer courses for those who would like to go from little knowledge to being able to read independently.
