About Robert
Born in South Africa and raised in Oxford, UK, I began my career as a professional touring and recording musician at the age of sixteen. As a member of the band Stornoway, I've toured the world and played drums on some of its most renowned stages, most notably Glastonbury’s Pyramid stage. I've performed live on “Later...with Jools Holland”, alongside Jay Z, Foo Fighters, Norah Jones, and Sting, recorded live sessions in the infamous Abbey Road studios, performed on some of the BBC’s main prime-time radio and television political programs, and received a silver record from BMI for record sales - all before the age of 25. Over the past 12 years as a Music Teacher, I have worked with all ages in the UK and US as a Private Tutor, Lead Teacher, Teaching Artist, and Music Therapist. Blending all the aspects of music that I've learned from experience, I use a unique teaching methodology focused on excellence, enjoyment, and creative rule-breaking. Having studied music throughout school, worked as an award-winning professional musician, and been trained as a music teacher, my knowledge and fluency in music is extensive. My students never leave a lesson without a new piece of valuable information and something to add to their skillset.

I am a great believer in meeting any student where they are at - both in their knowledge of a subject as well as their natural interest. Music is multi-faceted and highly personal. Playing music is even more so. I remember loving the practical side of it, and feeling less enthused by the theoretical side when I was in school. This natural interest is often hard to discern because we are all conditioned to feel like, unless we learn all the aspects of a subject, we won’t be proficient in it. This leaves little room for a student's individual way of learning.
In my first lesson with a student, I am focused on discovering not only what interests them the most, but also how best to prioritize the information I’ll need to give them. For example, if a student can play a melody or a rhythm perfectly by ear but struggles when I ask them to play it while reading sheet music, I can tailor the curriculum so that any information related to theory is woven seamlessly into a lesson plan that focuses on performance and musicianship. On the other hand, many of my students show a great aptitude, and even a preference for the nitty-gritty of music theory. For these students, I create lesson plans that use performance more as a means to put into practice what we learn in our more conversational sessions.
A typical guitar lesson might begin with a warm-up exercise to get the fingers moving, followed by a review of previous material and an introduction to new concepts or techniques. I also provide assignments for my students to practice between lessons, as well as feedback on their progress.
I am patient, supportive, and willing to adapt my teaching methods to the needs of the individual student.
Guitar lessons can be beneficial for students of all levels, from beginners who are just starting out to more advanced players looking to refine their skills or explore new styles. The specificities of the lessons will depend on the student's individual goals and needs, and may be tailored to suit their level of experience, musical interests, and learning style.

Robert's passion for music is contagious, and he goes above and beyond to foster a love for music in his students.
If you are looking for a music tutor who will inspire and guide you on your musical journey, Robert is the perfect choice. He has had a profound impact on my musical development, and I am confident that he will do the same for anyone fortunate enough to study with him!Robert taught me Drums, Piano, and Guitar for 3 years in both private lessons and in group lessons at my college. In the time I have known him, he has demonstrated kindness in his character, with respect toward all people. He brings with him, to both low- and high-pressure situations, a sense of calm and ease, and he is able to adapt his communication style to meet the needs of different contexts and people, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, etc. On countless occasions, I have seen him demonstrate empathic responses to those with troubles or obstacles. It seems to come as second nature to him, as he is an all-around “stand up guy.”
