About Helen

I have worked as a language specialist for 30 years and in Brighton for the past 6 years working solely on dissertations with approximately 50 students undertaking dissertations in business, psychology, nursing and English literature.

I have a very high success rate with many achieving a first class or 2:1 degree. I give clear, structured help and feedback, from proposal to submission. This can include proofreading, too.

I have many years of experience working in this and related fields:
• I have a Master’s degree in Education and a Master’s degree in Language
• I am a qualified Dyslexia Assessor and Tutor

These qualifications have enabled me to understand and deal with the language needs of s students at all levels and this has involved working with:

• Secondary school students with special needs, in particular dyslexia, followed by:
• College students who were taking a wide range of courses, assessing and tutoring, after which I have concentrated on:
• University students undertaking dissertations in many subject areas.

About the lesson

I work primarily with university students undertaking dissertations who need extra help and support. This can include help with proposals, researching the topic, working through the key sections and helping to organise what is needed for each, structuring the dissertation, writing convincing introductions and conclusions, proofreading, and thinking about the limitations and applications of the research.

I work online (although can organise sessions in Brighton, too, as this is where I am based). I usually organise an initial phone call or Skype conversation to understand the student’s needs. I can then propose what I think will be helpful, and we can come up with a plan of how we will work together. This is obviously flexible and may need to change in line with topic and university requirements – we can revisit the plan and timeline on a regular basis.

Each student’s needs will be different, and I am very good at identifying what is required and making recommendations that will help to achieve a good grade with a minimum of stress.

If the student has special educational needs, e.g., dyslexia, this will be factored in to sessions in a responsive, supportive way.

I cover study skills at every stage, making sure that students know what is expected of them and providing support with activities that are new to them, for example writing lengthy papers or finding relevant journal articles.

My students have enjoyed working with me, keeping in contact at every stage of their work. I really enjoy working with my students, too, and particularly love hearing about how well they have done and how proud they are of their achievements.
