About John
We're in a different world, a world past memorization and fact-regurgitation (which, granted, both have their place in certain situations).
What students need today are teachers that see the student as a PERSON. I'll be that teacher.
As a student, you won't just do what I tell you to do. I'll ask you open-ended questions to really see what YOU think about a subject. 100%, this helps students truly understand.
I've seen this work in essays, for example. I had a student write a personal essay for Northwestern University, a top 10 US college. In that essay, the student introduced great ideas, but left out a lot of detail when describing their experiences.
I asked the student open-ended questions. Simple open-ended questions. Like, "why?" or "how did you feel about this?", and I continued to push, leading the student to expand these experiences in writing with specificity.
I didn't tell the student what to write. I asked the student what they really *felt* and what they were leaving off the page (we often leave out details because we're afraid of looking weak or vulnerable).
In some of these details, the student actually admitted some mistakes. No one wants to make mistakes! At least most people don't. But the students that are willing to admit to mistakes in their life (AND show us how they've learned from those mistakes) stand out as applicants.
Anyways, rant over. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
(that student went on to get accepted to Northwestern)

Teaching method:
Asking open-ended questions, getting YOU, the student, to find the answers.
Lesson plans:
Crafted on an individual basis, fit to the student's areas of strength and needed development.
Difference:
I have eight nephews and nieces, ranging from four to 22 years old, and we all get along great. Our relationships help me identify with a broad spectrum of students.
If the student is able to feel at ease, they'll almost always learn and perform better.
Levels:
I've successfully taught and improved the English grades/performance of students from the pre-school to post-graduate level.
