About Ida

Hi! I am a Finnish and literature student at the University of Eastern Finland. My goal is to finish my master's degree within a year and focus fully on teaching afterwards.

I started teaching Finnish as a foreign language about two years ago. I've been a teacher to both individual students and groups. I'm happy to teach all levels and help you prepare for YKI tests, for example. My work languages are Finnish and English, but I also understand Swedish, German and a little bit of Spanish.

I enjoy the variety of the job. Every student is different, so each lesson is different, too. On one lesson I can teach how to write an email, on the next I can teach grammar and on the third I can help solve a practical problem. It's very rewarding and meaningful to see student's motivation, genuine will to learn and develop their language skills. Teaching online also gives freedom: I can teach whoever, wherever, and whenever.

I'm a positive and social person. I enjoy being in contact with different people and I get to know new people easily. I'm also very flexible: changes of schedule or plans for a lesson don't bother me, even if they happen quickly! I'm willing to try new ways to teach and guide students. Challenges motivate me to grow and develop.

Reading and writing are my Greatest passions. I read a lot of books both in Finnish and in English. I also have multiple on-going writing projects. My other hobbies are cooking, baking and hand-crafts, especially knitting.

About the lesson

I plan the teaching and lessons with each student. We start by a conversation about what they want to learn and what they need. I listen to the student's wishes and needs carefully. I also consider their skill level, previous experiences of studying Finnish and their general situation in life.

Methods and material change according to the situation and the theme we're studying: for example a student focusing on grammar has different Lessons than a student who is preparing for an YKI test.
