About Louie

I enjoy education. I believe that it is not only about teaching but also about communicating, listening and beyond.
Cantonese has been the core element throughout my career. I was a journalist and TV producer in several leading media companies in Hong Kong for over a decade. In this Asian cosmopolitan, Cantonese and English are the two main languages. So I had a bilingual education background since I was little.
Later on, I brought my knowledge of Cantonese to the field of tertiary education. Between 2019 to 2022, I became a Lecturer in several University and tertiary institutes in Hong Kong, focusing on teaching Journalism, Communications Studies and Broadcasting courses. I guided my students to speak Cantonese up to the professional broadcasting level.
Due to my career background, I also accept jobs including Chinese writing, editing and translation.
I am now living in Edinburgh, the lovely city in which I got my postgraduate degree in Digital Society of the University of Edinburgh. Here, I also had the opportunity to work in Forest Kindergarten and guide the young ones.

About the lesson

My teaching style is 2Fs – Fun and Flexible!
Taking the first step of learning a new language is always hard. People may fear that they need to memorise lots of pronunciation, sound, tone, grammar, etc. Yet, this is not my way of teaching. Language is about communicating. The key is connecting language to our daily life. I hope to learn more about you before and during the first few lessons to understand your background and purpose of learning. I will then design the teaching content that suits you the most, with the hope that you can use it besides the lessons. You may even start your learning journey without the use of Jyutping (the romanisation system of Cantonese). If you find this language practical and unburdened to learn, you will find it fun to dig deeper.
Flexibility is another key to learning a new language. I would adjust the content according to your progress. I would even make adjustments based on your personality and interests. For example, we can use Cantonese songs as part of the teaching content if you are a music lover.
I teach Cantonese for all levels and ages. My suggested lesson duration for beginners is 30 minutes and twice a week. Yet please feel free to let me know your preference.
