About Sophie

I'm a native BSL user and a Child of a Deaf Adult (CODA). For me, BSL isn't just a subject; it's my first language and a fundamental part of who I am. Growing up, I experienced the world through two languages and two cultures, navigating between the hearing and Deaf communities. This unique perspective has given me a deep, intuitive understanding of BSL and the nuances of Deaf culture. I believe that BSL is a beautiful and vital language that connects people. My primary motivation for teaching is to share the joy and richness of this language with others. I want to help bridge the communication gap between the hearing and Deaf worlds, making it easier for people to connect, interact, and build genuine relationships. My goal is to make BSL accessible to everyone, whether they want to learn for personal enrichment, career development, or to communicate with a loved one. By teaching BSL, I hope to empower more people to become confident communicators and allies to the Deaf community.

About the lesson

My teaching methodology is built on two core principles: immersion and student-centred learning. As a CODA (Child of a Deaf Adult), BSL is my first language, and I believe the most effective way to learn is by actively using it. My lessons are designed to be practical, fun, and highly interactive, focusing on real-world communication skills.

My classes use a blend of structured learning and organic conversation. We'll start with foundational grammar and vocabulary, following a clear path of the students needs. I use visual aids, role-playing, and hands-on exercises to help you master new signs. My approach is to get you signing from the very first lesson, building your confidence with every new word. We won't just learn signs in isolation; we'll focus on finger-spelling, facial expressions, and body language—the crucial non-manual elements that are essential for fluency and authentic communication.

A typical lesson is one hour long. This duration is perfect for maintaining focus and allows us to cover new material while leaving time for practice and revision. For younger learners, I can adapt the session length to ensure they remain engaged and energised.

I am a Level 6 qualified BSL user, which means I have achieved a high level of fluency and expertise in the language. As a CODA, BSL is a natural part of my life, giving me a deep and intuitive understanding of the language and Deaf culture. I am not just a teacher; I am a lifelong communicator in BSL. This lived experience allows me to provide valuable insights beyond the curriculum, helping you navigate cultural nuances and communicate with confidence and respect.

My lessons are perfect for a wide range of students: Ages 5 and up: I am experienced in teaching both children and adults. I can make lessons engaging and accessible for younger students while maintaining a clear learning path.
