Mathematics has always been a head scratcher for me as a student, so I know how tricky it might get sometimes. Having being able to understand what the problem is asking and relating it with the physical and practical phenomenon we face is the key to understand how we need to take the problem and solve it. My approach would always be to relate it with something that you are familiar with and hence understanding it so that you feel comfortable to solve it.
