About James
Badminton has been a huge part of my life since rocking up at Carlton Forum Leisure Centre (Nottingham) on a Saturday morning 30 years ago as a 6-year-old with no badminton racket but plenty of enthusiasm. The good nature, patience and knowledge of the coaches during this time helped me on the road to representing the County at Junior Level and later in adult life playing Premier Division Badminton.

My teaching style is probably different to your regular badminton coach. Your traditional coach will purely coach from the training manual, with a complete focus on developing elite techniques. My style is rather different in that we will always aim for the end goal of elite technique but it is more than likely you will be aiming for the unachievable and we adapt accordingly. I will work with your current technique and not look to completely re-model it but improve it. I've lost count of how many times I've seen a player be coached and finish up a lesser player than when they started. My aim as a coach is to help you become a better player and win more games of badminton than you were before being coached, or what's the point in being coached at all? I offer you my 34 years' experience of how to eradicate your bad habits and demonstrate helpful tricks and tactics to become a better player. During sessions, I also talk a lot on the mental side of the sport. How to control your emotions, including anxiety and anger, can be just as important as showing the correct techniques. I've developed many tactics and coping strategies to deal with differing emotions you encounter on a badminton court. In summary, as a coach I view the whole picture when it comes to improving someone I work with. Technical, tactical, physical and emotional to optimise their performance and enjoyment.
