About ADAM

'Liverpool composer Adam Letman revolutionises traditional Irish sound'- Matt Markey, L1News.com I am a composer and conductor who has taught music theory and Jazz saxophone since I was 16, after gaining my grade 8 in music theory. I am a recorded composer whose works have been played in Liverpool, Manchester, Belgium and Ireland. I have 3 of my pieces published on Spotify under the name Adam B Letman. My students have gone on to study composition at the Birmingham Conservatoire and musicology at Manchester University. I studied with the acclaimed Liverpool composer Professor Stephen Pratt, as well as Professors Camden Reeves, Stephen Davismoon and Dr Richard Whalley. I am also an active performer in the Liverpool-based Jazz ensemble 'Sweet Beans' who recently played the International Jazz Festival in Liverpool 2020.

My teaching methodology is individual to each student. EVERY lesson is tailored to that particular student's needs. I have taught people aged 6-74, with complex learning difficulties such as autism and dyslexia. I get the best out of every student by being approachable, down to Earth, open-minded and having detailed knowledge in the fields I teach.

Find out more about ADAM

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

When I was 11 in secondary school, it was the only thing that I was every very good at!
  • Is there a particular type music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Too many to name, but in short, Charles Mingus, The Dubliners, John Coltrane, Sufjan Stevens, Sigur Ros and Rachmaninoff
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

The most difficult course I could teach was something I explored a little in my masters; Negative harmony-based fractal composition!
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Anything is difficult to master....but I've never understood how people get so good at the trombone.
  • What are your keys to success?

Dedication, hard work, rest and obsession.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Charles Mingus (I'd be too scared to approach him if he'd had a drink!), Luke Kelly and Oscar Peterson
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

The first time I did my grade 7 theory exam back in 2016, I did no revision whatsoever. I went into the exam blind because I was so cocky that I knew what I was doing and I was an expert! I went into the exam and opened the paper, and was shocked by how 'easy' everything appeared to be, so I finished it in 45 minutes and left, full of confidence with my performance....I completely failed! This was the only music exam I ever failed and it taught me that no matter how good you THINK you are, you always need to prepare and practise/revise.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

Unlike certain teachers I've had in both school and university, I listen.
