About Carmen
With a degree in Music from The University of York, I have been a teacher of piano, vocals, saxophone and clarinet for nearly ten years; as well as a singersongwriter (under the name NIXE and with the band Polarsets). I have played all over the world; from Bogotá to Paris.
I have qualified teacher status (QTS) in the UK and am an encouraging, friendly and compassionate teacher.
I recently started offering songwriting lessons locally and found them to be incredibly fun and rewarding. I love being the catalyst for other people to express themselves.

About the lesson

My teaching method is highly individualised; it can depend on your approach, your style of music, your ability level and your goals.
However, the basics of my teaching method are these:
1. "The essentials", in terms of musical theory, are important to understand to prevent them from being a limiting factor. We won't be learning any more than is useful (unless you request it).
2. How to turn your ideas into songs that you can share. This can venture into using particular software, production skills and distribution plans.
2. How to plan. This is integral and so easy to forget when inspiration hits. It is, however, the only way to prevent yourself from starting many different projects that you never finish.
3. How to cope with songwriter's block or any other emotional barricade that tries to trip you up. These are inevitable and learning how to deal with these issues before they come for you is best.
Additionally, I can keep you accountable, keep on task and prepare you for a deadline.
Whether you come to me as a complete beginner with a keen interest or an experienced songwriter who needs help on a particular project, I have the experience to assist.
Though the music I typically write might be considered "indie pop", I have experience in many different genres; from lieder to metal to jazz.
