About Alex
I am a visiting Jazz saxophone tutor at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Jazz School UK and have also I have also taught at the Junior Royal Academy of Music.
In these roles I teach my more high level jazz improvisation and composition skills, however I am not limited to teaching at such a high level- I frequently teach all standards of student, including total beginners.
I regularly teach private students of all ages and levels and in a variety of styles. I have a 100 percent pass rate for ABRSM exams grade 1-8 and jazz exams. Other students not wishing to take exams have forged a more personal course of learning for example being prepared for music college auditions, which I also have lots of experience of.
I trained with Mike Williams, Julian Seigel, Jean Toussaint at the Birmingham Conservatoire as well as studying composition with Mike Gibbs, Hans Koller and Liam Noble and Jazz piano with Mike Williams and Hans Koller at the college.
In terms of my students’ experiences whilst and after studying with me:
I have one student who when he came to me was primarily a clarinettist and had not played tenor sax before. After 4 months of jazz sax lessons he was able to commit John Coltrane and Warne Marsh solos to memory and improvise using the ideas of the solos we have studied together in the lessons!
Another one of my students came to me with a general interest in jazz; after 2 years of lessons he is now a student at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama on the jazz performance course.
Many of my students that chose to learn and study jazz with me are able to commit solos played by their favourite players within the first couple of years and many go on to develop as fantastic improvisers once feeling empowered with their knowledge acquired during our course of study together.
I have other examples of students like this (see testemonials) who have come to me with an interest and passion for jazz but without much experience and have applied themselves, worked diligently, and are now achieving great things and having fun with music at a high level!

I am a very experienced saxophone teacher who is very versatile and adaptable to each students style of learning. I teach all ages and levels of student from beginner to professional. I can take students through all levels of jazz and classical exams as well as preparing for music college auditions. I am also very good at balancing making lessons fun and rewarding as well as being at the right level of challenge for you!
I teach Jazz Saxophone/ Jazz Piano/ Music Theory/ Composition
I have 8 years of experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students at the Royal Welsh College of Music. I have also coordinated undergraduate transcription and analysis modules at the college.
I also have a 1st class honours degree from Birmingham Conservatoire, Distinction at Grade 8 Tenor Sax and an A at music A- Level
I teach lessons via Zoom/ Skype and they cost £40 for 45 minutes. I offer a free 30 minute consultation lesson so that we can get to know each other and look at your interests and aims for your learning.
As I presently teach online via Zoom/ Skype we are not limited by geography so feel free to get in touch wherever you are based . If you are unsure about the online learning format- most of my students have found it extremely rewarding, many even preferring this format. Here is a quote about the transfer to online learning from one of my great present students, Sam:
“When Alex and I had to switch to online lessons via Skype, I assumed they would inevitably be a less complete experience than in-person lessons. Instead, Alex has made a virtue of the technology we use, providing helpful links and notes in the chat, and we have had some fantastic sessions that are just as rich in content, inspiring and challenging as if we had met in person. I highly recommend his teaching through this medium.” Sam E (2020)
I am available most weekday mornings until noon and most weekday evenings from 17.00, however I am happy to discuss all options with you when we talk.
I teach all ages and all levels of student on the saxophone, and have a great deal of experience with this from absolute beginner to professional. For Jazz piano I teach beginner to intermediate. For theory and composition I teach all levels.
I can prepare students for ABRSM grade exams; either classical grades 1-8 or jazz exams. I have a 100 percent pass rate with students wishing to take exams. Not everyone wishes to follow this course however, in this instance I can also plan tailor a more personal plan of learning for students not wishing to sit exams. I train all of my students in general musicianship skills: ear training, theory, sight- reading and improvisation (if they wish).
For those students not sitting exams we will select some repertoire relevant to their taste and level. This is likely to be in line with an approximate level of the grade syllabus- i.e. a student can work towards a grade and know where they stand without actually sitting the exam!
As a note about me and my personality: I love music and this comes across in my teaching style- I am enthusiastic, passionate, patient, personal. I recognise that everyone has their own unique learning style and cater for this as much as possible to bring everyone I work with towards their full potential. I am sure you that will enjoy studying with me as I will enjoy teaching you!

I have enjoyed my Jazz lessons with Alex. His patience and support have allowed me to progress fairly quickly into the world of Jazz which always felt remote. His insistence on always using the metronome has been very helpful. I am very grateful to him.
Alex is unlike any teacher I've had before. While many stick to soulless study pieces Alex offers an evolving and adaptable teaching scheme that focuses on what the pupil wants to learn. Our lessons touched on theory, jazz history and about a million ways of hitting a ii-ÂV-ÂI progression in 60mins! He was also more than willing to slow down the pace anytime I had difficulty with a concept. To anyone serious about developing their jazz improvisational skills I recommend Alex above any other.
When I first met Alex, my knowledge of jazz was very limited. I was very keen but was not that confident as an improviser. In two years of lessons Alex has managed to improve my work rate, my confidence as a soloist and has inspired me to pursue playing jazz as a career. I am about to start studying jazz saxophone at a conservatoire, a situation I would never have found myself in without Alex's dedicated, enthusiastic and personal tutoring.
I have been having lessons regularly with Alex for about a year now, he is a real teacher. His lessons are always different and he tailors them to the specific individual. If you go to a lesson with Alex with nothing in mind it is also not a problem as he will pull something out of the bag which will blow your mind! A teacher that I would recommend to everyone and will continue to have lessons with!

My Zoom/ Skype lessons are £40 for 45 minutes, as with the online format some students find that an hour is quite intense for screen time- if you wish to try an hour that is absolutely fine by me and we can discuss these options! :)
