About Richard
In my own practice, I have trained in several short- and long-term courses (including at RADA, NYU Tisch, Emerson College and Accademia dell'Arte). I have been performing my own solo show (CRY, BLUEBERRY) since 2017, receiving several four-star reviews before sold-out audiences – and soon to be performed at the Brighton and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. Within my current MSc, my dissertation addresses the benefits of theatre for reconciliation in conflicted and post-conflict societies. Aside from CRY, BLUEBERRY, I am developing a solo show about Angolan rebel warlord Jonas Savimbi.
I have helped several working actors (four, to be precise), friends of mine, work towards giving their best shot at auditions. I have also directed a research and development workshop for an upcoming play, Shakespeare monologues and scenes from Tony Kushner's "A Bright Room Called Day".

English
Hello / hola / olá! I am a London-based theatre practitioner (with primarily acting and playwriting experience) who is fluent in English and Spanish, and able to speak Portuguese as well. (I am also learning Swahili and French – step by step!)
In the vein of creating honest performance, I am invested in helping other actors express themselves at their most open and raw. Students work with me on soliloquies, monologues and duologues based not on their casting profile, but on the degree to which they personally relate to the piece. This is especially pertinent when dealing with Shakespeare, whose texts I help my students decipher and interpret in fresh, daring, unique ways. I also can assist with songs, although mainly from an acting rather than musical standpoint. I help analyse the play as a whole alongside them, so that their one- to three-minute exposés can showcase them at their fullest and most informed. My approach, while taking technique into account, is far more focused on the emotional life, taking into account context and stakes.
Furthermore, I teach not only about performance, but also about playwriting. I also help my students create their own solo work (with an emphasis on written, as opposed to devised, work), whether it be five minutes to ninety and beyond, and whether based on fictitious characters, historical figures or themselves. I bolster my teaching with my experience in research and academia (a BA in International Human Rights and soon an MSc in Violence, Conflict and Development) and my interest in the sociopolitical sciences.
My favorite playwrights are Tony Kushner, William Shakespeare, Martin McDonaugh, Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams; but I am always excited to discover new works alongside my students.

Details
As I am a working actor and MSc student, it is difficult for me to travel – although this can certainly be discussed. (And, of course, the first lesson is free! We will have discussed ahead of time your requirements, so we'll be getting straight to work right from the start.)
My cancellation policy is a full refund if I am notified more than 24 hours prior to the lesson start time; after this, full payment for the hour will be expected.
