About Caitlin

I’ve always been fascinated by insects — one of my first words was “pilla” (caterpillar) — and that fascination gradually grew into a much broader love of nature and the outdoors. I love discovering what is hiding under a rock, in a bush or up a tree, and seeing how all the different parts of an ecosystem interact. My M.Sc. focused on plant–insect interactions and how they can be applied to the biological control of invasive species.

One of my favourite things about biology is the puzzle of understanding how different factors influence one another. If I find a creature I don’t recognise, or notice something interesting happening in an aquarium or garden, my first instinct is usually to start asking questions and work out what is going on. That curiosity is a big part of how I teach as well. I want students to feel that biology is something they can investigate, question and understand, rather than just a collection of facts they have to memorise.

A lot of my teaching experience also comes from Scouts, where “learning by doing” is a big part of how we teach. I’ve spent many years working with younger children through games, activities and practical experiences, while my more formal teaching experience has been at undergraduate university level as a tutor and laboratory demonstrator. Across both, I like giving students the chance to reason through a problem, make connections and discover the answer themselves, with guidance and explanation where they need it. I also genuinely enjoy the many “why?” questions that come my way and am always happy to follow a student’s curiosity a little further when something catches their interest.

Outside of the sciences, I also have a strong love of the arts. I majored in Classical Singing during my undergraduate degree and have been singing, dancing and performing for most of my life. These days, I also draw on that experience to create long-form educational content on YouTube, where I look closely at music and performance and explore how things like vocals, instrumentation, production, choreography and staging work together.

I enjoy having interests across a variety of subjects, and I think that curiosity carries through all of them. Whether I’m looking at an ecosystem, a musical performance, an aquarium or something I’ve found outdoors, I tend to want to understand how the individual parts fit together and why they work the way they do.

My approach to tutoring is focused on helping students genuinely understand biology rather than simply memorising facts. I use a lot of the “learning by doing” approach I gained from years of teaching and learning in Scouts, so I like students to actively work through and discuss ideas, examples, problems and practical applications rather than just listen to explanations. I also try to spark curiosity and interest in the subject by connecting concepts to real organisms, ecosystems and biological questions, and encouraging students to want to know more rather than treating the work as something they simply have to learn for a test.

A typical lesson is shaped around what the student needs most. We might work through a difficult concept together, tackle practice questions, revise a section of the syllabus, interpret graphs or data, or look at how different biological ideas connect to each other. I use clear explanations, diagrams, real-world examples and questions that help students reason their way towards an answer. My background in zoology, entomology, ecology and biological research also means I can show students how many of the concepts they encounter in class apply in real scientific work.

My lessons are suitable for a wide range of ages and levels. I’m happy to work with secondary-school Biology/Life Sciences students, undergraduate students needing support in areas such as zoology, ecology, entomology or conservation, and younger primary-school learners who are especially curious about the natural world and want to explore a topic in more depth. For younger students, lessons can be much more interest-led and exploratory — a chance to ask all the “why?” questions, follow their curiosity and build a strong foundation in how living things and ecosystems work.

I can also help with scientific reasoning, interpreting graphs and research papers, structuring written answers, study skills and approaching biological problems logically.

I teach primarily in English. I also have limited working proficiency in Afrikaans, although English is the language in which I am most comfortable teaching.
