About Nicky

Interdisciplinary learning is at the heart of my education and career. I hold a bachelor's degree in Biology and Environmental Studies from Amherst College. In September 2021, I graduated with a master's degree in Biological and Environmental Sciences and a certificate in Science Writing and Rhetoric at the University of Rhode Island. Having engaged in collaborative projects using science and mathematics both domestically and internationally, I regularly communicate with diverse audiences. I have 3 years of experience tutoring K-12 students in subjects from Geology to Geometry to English. Currently, I tutor a 3rd grader and 5th grader via Zoom on a near-daily basis, in addition to offering an array of remote services to students from 6th grade to the undergraduate level. My past work as a teaching assistant at the University of Rhode Island in science and mathematics and a mentor at various science organizations has given me additional experience crafting lesson plans and connecting with kids and young adults.

About the lesson

My teaching style molds to the individual student's needs, strengths, and weaknesses. In general, I believe that one-on-one learning is the key to understanding any subject. My lessons are often discussion-based and offer flexible lesson plans with student input. I follow a systems-based teaching design by introducing multiple concepts to encourage analytical thinking. Mathematics today is embedded in the ways we live like never before; it is important to give students the opportunity to think about how they could benefit from the learning in their everyday life. In my past teaching experiences, I have found this strategy to be best for memory retention and student interest.
