About Nika

Ko Wai Au — Who I Am

Ko Nika Rua ahau. I am a passionate advocate for Te Reo Māori, tikanga, and the restoration of mātauranga Māori within our everyday lives. My journey is deeply grounded in whakapapa, community, and lived experience — not just academic learning, but the reality of walking in both Te Ao Māori and Te Ao Pākehā.

I hold a Bachelor of Mātauranga Māori (Māori Education) and a Level 7 Certificate in Advanced Māori Language Acquisition, but more importantly, my learning has come through wānanga, marae, kōrero with kaumātua, and being immersed in spaces where tikanga is lived, not just spoken about. 🫶

Why I Teach

I teach because I’ve seen firsthand what happens when our people are disconnected — from language, from identity, from tikanga. And I’ve also seen the transformation when that connection is restored.

Te Reo Māori is not just a language — it is a doorway into understanding who you are, where you come from, and how you stand in the world. Tikanga is not just “rules” — it is the framework that guides our behavior, our relationships, and our responsibility to one another.

Too often, people are made to feel whakamā, judged, or unsure of where they stand. That’s not how we grow. I teach to create a space where you can learn without fear, be challenged with purpose, and build real confidence.

About the lesson

Step Into Te Ao Māori — Not Just Learn It, Live It

Are you ready to move beyond surface-level learning and truly embody Te Reo Māori and Tikanga? This is not your typical class — this is a transformational journey grounded in real practice, lived experience, and cultural integrity.

My Approach — Practical, Immersive, Real

I use a kaupapa-driven methodology designed for adult learners who are serious about growth.

Reo Activation & Immersion – From the very first session, you’ll be speaking, listening, and thinking in Te Reo Māori through guided kōrero, real-life scenarios, and structured repetition.

Scaffolded Learning – Each lesson builds progressively:
• Strengthening sentence structures and grammar (tense, flow, complexity)
• Developing confidence in everyday and kaupapa-based kōrero
• Moving into deeper whakaaro, debate, and expressive language

Tikanga in Action – Not just theory. You’ll explore:
• Marae protocol, roles, and kawa 🫶
• Concepts like tapu, noa, mana, utu — applied to real-life situations
• Navigating tikanga in modern spaces (workplaces, governance, whānau settings)

Wānanga Style Delivery – Interactive, discussion-based, and reflective:
• Role plays, case studies, and scenario-based learning
• Audio, written, and spoken assessments
• Safe but challenging environment to grow confidence

Programme Structure

1–2 hour sessions per week
8-week structured courses (Reo Māori & Tikanga Māori options)

You’ll cover:
• Everyday and formal communication
• Narrative, opinion, and reasoning in Te Reo
• Tikanga across marae, leadership, life events, and contemporary issues
• Final presentations and real-world application

Qualifications & Expertise

Bachelor of Mātauranga Māori (Māori Education)
Level 7 Certificate in Advanced Māori Language Acquisition

Delivered through Reo Rua Consultants, with a strong focus on authentic, community-grounded learning.
