About Abby

I'm a Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) who is passionate about making music. I have played the piano since I was 10, started producing music during lockdown, and took a gap year to study Diploma of Arts (Music Production). Now, I divide my time between managing finances at the organisation I work at and creating and teaching music.

About the lesson

Most of my students come to me wanting to be able to play by feel. They want to have a good ear, make good music (harmony, melody, etc), break free of reading music, and playing truly from the heart. This is what my aim is - to make people love music, and translate what's in their heart into their music. Beyond piano, I'm happy to talk about songwriting, composition, and production - other areas I really love!

I'm mostly self-taught in piano and produce hip-hop/neo-soul music, so this is what my strongest style is. To check if this style is for you, you can check out my socials where I like to share my beats (YouTube link below), and Spotify/other streaming sites under Abby G.

A few things to consider:

- I have a unique approach to teaching where each student's lesson is customised according to what the student aims to learn. For instance, if they want to learn harmony/making good chord progressions, I'll construct a lesson around it; if they want to learn songwriting, I can teach about coming up with melody lines, chords, arrangement, etc. Most importantly, everything is customised and centred around the aim to make the student a musician from the heart.

- I am self-taught, so there are areas that I'm good at and some that I'm not (for example, I don't teach how to read music because I'm terrible at it! But I can teach developing a good ear!)

- As such, I offer a free 30 minute Zoom/Skype call for a preliminary chat. This is for two reasons: 1) so I can understand what the student wants and construct a plan to achieve that goal; 2) to see if we are a good fit. If I can't teach what the student wants (as I'm self-taught), I'll be honest to let them know :)

As for logistics: the lesson is via Zoom/Skype, and I use a piano learning tool called Midiculous which has worked great for students to learn.

Typical topics my students want to learn are (but of course we can talk about other things!):
- Harmony
- Reharmonisation
- Applying scales to practice
- Making melody lines
- Voice leadings
- Playing for worship services at church
- Production, composition, arrangement
