About Mawethu
I am a Mechanical Engineering graduate from the University of Cape Town (UCT) with a strong academic foundation in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and core Mechanical Engineering subjects. I offer online tutoring to high school learners and university students, with a focus on clarity, practical understanding, and long-term confidence rather than short-term memorization. I take my role as a tutor seriously and approach every lesson with professionalism, preparation, and genuine care for my students’ progress. Outside of academics, I enjoy running, hiking, and playing football, which helps me maintain discipline and balance. I am also a big fan of philosophy, a discipline that constantly drives the “why” question in life. I enjoy questioning what society often labels as “normal,” and I bring this same mindset into my teaching. Beyond solving problems, I love guiding students in career choices, helping them understand not just what they are studying, but why it matters and how it connects to their future.

My approach to private tutoring is practical, structured, and concept-driven. I focus on building a strong understanding of fundamentals before moving into problem-solving, ensuring students don’t just memorise methods but truly understand why things work. As a Mechanical Engineering graduate, I naturally link theory to real-world applications, which helps students grasp abstract concepts more easily.
I teach primarily in English and can also explain concepts in isiXhosa, where helpful, especially to support understanding for learners who are more comfortable in their home language.
A typical lesson begins with a quick assessment of the student’s current understanding, followed by a focused explanation of key concepts. We then work through guided examples together before moving on to independent practice with feedback. Lessons are interactive, and students are encouraged to ask questions and think aloud.
My lessons are aimed at high school learners (Grades 8–12) taking Mathematics and Physical Sciences, as well as first- and second-year university students in selected Mechanical Engineering modules. I offer online tutoring, which allows for flexible scheduling, screen sharing, and step-by-step walkthroughs of problems.
My goal is not only to help students improve their marks, but to build confidence, problem-solving skills, and independent thinking.
