About Monica

Professionally, I have worked part-time as a math, Latin, English, and religion teacher for both a private elementary school and a homeschool co-op. During the day I work as a construction manager, but enjoy being able to tutor part-time. During high school and college, I have used tutoring services and know the relief of learning from someone who might teach in a way that just clicks for you (extremely important!). There were times when I definitely felt disadvantaged until I received help from someone who was able to speak “my learning language”. Once that happened my confidence grew as did the love of the subject. Even though I was given the option to go to school, this was part of the reason I stayed homeschooled. I realized the importance of getting customized help and developing personal relationships with teachers. :)

About the lesson

During the lesson, I like to take the time to understand what you struggle with, understand how you learn best, explain the issue using relevant real-world examples, then solidify learning with hands-on practice. Dyslexia and auditory processing issues run in my family so I was homeschooled and taught using special education techniques that engage all five senses. I have seen the benefits of using this method firsthand. The more senses that are engaged the greater chance your entire brain is involved in learning, memorizing, and problem-solving. This method might look like drawing pictures to associate a procedure with colorful imagery, using your finger to draw numbers or words, or saying what you’re thinking out loud while you tackle the problem. The things I use to teach are techniques I use even during my day job! My lessons are geared at middle and elementary school students, but have helped out a few high school students as well.
