About Aly
I graduated from McGill University with a joint honors degree in Mathematics and Economics and I’m currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science at McMaster University. My path to math wasn’t straightforward and I actually struggled through middle school and early high school. In Grade 11 I had the fortune to have an amazing teacher, Mr. Joe, who changed my outlook: he prioritized deep conceptual understanding over memorizing a collection of tricks, which is what I thought math was all about up until then. That shift is central to my teaching philosophy and how I help students develop genuine confidence and problem-solving skill.

Students can struggle with math for a variety of reasons, and I make sure to apply a needs-based approach that fits each student's needs. However, I generally structure my plan as follows:
1. Identify and address foundational gaps or problem areas: ensuring a solid foundation is key to gaining comfort with more challenging topics and is essential before moving forward with later material.
2. Tackle current material: Once students and I are comfortable with the prerequisites, we begin to build on that knowledge in-line with the current material.
3. Provide ample room for practice: I firmly believe mathematics is a language, like any other. Once the material is understood conceptually, practice will be essential to gain fluency and make sure solving related problems is second nature.
What I offer:
- Clear explanations of course material that emphasize intuition and visualizations
- Step-by-step problem solving
- Homework support
