About Carl
As a tutor with a teaching qualification, a PhD in maths, and over 14 years of experience, I have tutored learners of various abilities and on different course levels. My learners have had a range of requirements due to SEND, meaning that getting to know my learners and their support needs is key. Learners I have tutored have ranged in age from primary school (preparing for SATs), to secondary school age, students studying A Levels, and adults looking to improve their maths skills with a view to achieving Functional Skills qualifications or GCSEs in maths.
Learners need an approachable tutor with whom they can openly discuss their problems with coursework, and a strong rapport is an important aspect of the tutor-tutee relationship.
To ensure a good fit between potential tutees and me, I offer an initial session for free: this has helped learners and me to get to know each other and to ascertain if my tutoring style meets their needs.
My sessions are typically 1 hour in length, covering whatever topics need to be taught or revised.

In my tutoring practice, I offer sessions which are typically 1 hour in length. These sessions include an assessment of current understanding through carefully selected activities, development of techniques and skills in areas of current uncertainty, and linking of these areas to other areas to explain the usefulness of these topics. Discussion of potential areas requiring further support and development is another key part of my tutoring methodology.
My qualifications include a PGCE (with a focus in Secondary Maths) and a PhD in Applied Maths. My experiences as a tutor have been boosted by my previous work as a Lecturer of Maths and as a Learning Support Assistant at a Further Education college. I am accustomed to working with learners with differing areas of SEND, and building strong rapport with them.
I have previously taught most age ranges: from primary school learners preparing for SATs, to learners studying GCSEs, Functional Skills, and A Level Maths at school and college, to adults studying GCSE or Functional Skills Maths.
