About Malcolm
Most maths tutors studied maths. I use it.
I'm a Neuroscience PhD researcher at the University of Bristol, and a normal week for me involves quantifying experimental data, choosing and running the right statistical tests, and building analyses in R. That shapes how I teach: maths as a working tool with reasons behind it, rather than a stack of procedures to be memorised and hopefully recalled under exam pressure.
I took Mathematics at A-Level and came out with an A, then read Neuroscience at Warwick, graduating First Class. Between finishing my degree and starting my doctorate I spent a year at AstraZeneca analysing experimental datasets in R and Python, and I now teach undergraduates at Bristol as part of my PhD.
Six years of tutoring has taught me that maths is unusually unforgiving about gaps. It's the one subject where something you missed in Year 8 can quietly sabotage you in Year 11, because everything sits on top of everything else. Students end up concluding they're bad at maths when what's actually happened is that one brick got left out and nobody went back for it.
So that's the first thing I look for. I'm patient, I don't rush, and I'm entirely unbothered by going back to basics - going back is usually the fastest route forward

The first lesson is diagnostic. Bring a recent paper, mock or piece of marked homework and we'll work through it together not to score it, but to find out where the thinking breaks down. Nine times out of ten the problem isn't the topic you think it is.
After that, lessons follow a simple shape: recap anything set last time, build the topic properly, then put it straight to work on past paper questions from your exact board. I'd rather leave you able to do one thing unaided than half-able to do four.
Where students most often lose marks, and what I'll drill:
1. Method marks. Enormous numbers of marks are thrown away by students who could have got them for working they didn't write down.
2. Reading the question. Command words, what "hence" actually obliges you to do, when a question is telling you which method to use.
3. Timing. Knowing when to leave a question and come back, rather than sinking eight minutes into four marks.
4. Foundations. Fractions, negatives, rearranging, indices: the unglamorous things that quietly cost grades higher up.
I cover the full range: primary and secondary number work, GCSE Foundation and Higher, A-Level Pure, Mechanics and Statistics, and statistics for adult learners returning to study or preparing for a quantitative course.
If you want to send me a topic list or a specification link before we start, I'll come prepared. First lesson is free, bring whatever's currently annoying you most
