About Mehvish

Mathematics is often taught as a collection of rules: learn this formula, follow these steps, remember this method for the exam.

The problem is that the moment a question looks slightly different, those rules can stop being useful.

 I teach Maths differently.

I want my students to understand why a method works, how different areas of Mathematics connect, and how to recognise the underlying logic of a problem. Once that understanding is there, Maths becomes far less about remembering what to do and much more about knowing how to think.

This is particularly important at GCSE and A-Level, where achieving the highest grades requires more than simply being able to repeat familiar methods. Students need to be able to apply their knowledge to unfamiliar questions, reason independently and recognise which mathematical tools a problem is asking them to use.

With over 8 years of tutoring experience and more than 6,000 hours of teaching, I have worked with students across a huge range of abilities. Some come to me convinced that they simply “aren’t good at Maths”; others are already achieving strong grades and want to push themselves towards an 8, 9 or A*.

In both cases, my starting point is the same: understanding how that individual student thinks.

I break complex ideas down into simple, logical steps, identify gaps in foundational knowledge and adapt my explanations until a concept genuinely clicks. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions and, importantly, to understand that getting something wrong is often part of learning how to solve it.

Over the years, I have helped many students significantly improve their grades, including students who have gone on to achieve grades 8–9 at GCSE and A/A* at A-Level. My teaching experience also extends beyond traditional one-to-one tuition and includes homeschooling and teaching within college environments.

Alongside mathematical understanding, I teach students how to translate that knowledge into marks: interpreting difficult questions, choosing efficient methods, showing reasoning clearly, managing time and understanding what examiners are actually looking for.

One of the most rewarding changes isn't always the grade. It's watching a student go from saying “I can't do Maths” to looking at an unfamiliar problem and thinking, “I can work this out.”

That confidence comes from understanding and that's what I aim to build in every student I teach.

I believe in adapting my teaching style to suit the unique learning preferences of each student, ensuring they perform to the best of their abilities. By creating personalised learning programmes, I empower students to progress at their own pace and reach their full potential. My approach fosters a supportive environment where students feel motivated and confident to tackle challenges head-on. Typically, my teaching method begins with ensuring a thorough understanding of the content before delving into exam practice. In a subject as intricate as Mathematics, mastery of the material is essential. Once the concepts are grasped, we focus on honing exam skills, as practice is paramount for success. Personally, I am so adept with GCSE Maths past papers at this point that I have made a digital ebook explaining each question with working out for the last few years. I prefer to teach 2-hour lessons. Once a week. This works best as the first 30 minutes of the lesson is for review of homework and what was taught the previous week and the remainder of the lesson allows us to move on to the next topic. Homework is set with every lesson.
