It is important to tailor each teaching experience to the individual, since everyone's style and outlook are different. For this reason I believe it is important for the student to guide the sessions, with input where necessary to keep the progression on the right track. If you really understand a topic, not just for the exam but the way in which it fits in to the discipline at large, retention and competency can be increased dramatically.
