About Hannah
I am a final year university student currently studying for a degree in Maths. Throughout my A levels and gap year, I tutored six children of both primary and secondary school ages, either preparing them for their SATs or helping them with their maths work. Many of the students went from dreading maths to it becoming one of their favourite subjects and there was an average increase by about two grades. Currently, I manage a student-led scheme at my university which involves planning and delivering mentoring sessions to first year students to support them with both their academic studies and on how to get the most out of first year. These sessions receive a lot of positive feedback being described as ‘informative’ or ‘helpful’.

The key to success in maths is not just about learning academic content, but gaining confidence is also key. As someone who believed they were terrible at maths throughout primary school, it wasn’t until I was preparing for my year six SATs that I realised I could do maths. This new found confidence resulted in achieving the highest SAT score and maths becoming my favourite subject. This continued throughout high school and now I am studying a degree in it. To help students gain confidence, I ensure to create a positive and empowering learning environment with lots of encouragement to tackle more challenging questions and to reassure them that it’s okay to make mistakes. Additionally, understanding the underlying concepts instead of just memorising steps is also crucial to solving problems successfully which is why my lessons also emphasise explaining why we do each step and ensure students fully understand by asking them to write a short summary at the end. I also give real life examples of where this can be used to make it more relatable. I explain the concepts using interactive activities to make the learning process more interesting and engaging and to get the students involved to help them retain the information better. This is then supplemented with lots of practise questions so they get the chance to apply their new knowledge.
