About Helena

Hi, my name is Helena. I’m a Russell Group University student studying for a Master’s Degree in Mathematics. I’ve studied Mathematics and Further Mathematics at both GCSE and A-Level, and have extensive knowledge of the current curriculum. I’ve always been passionate about mathematics and love to help other students improve their ability in the subject by building confidence to support class work and exam technique. I’m a friendly, patient and empathetic tutor who, via my own experiences, understands the concerns that mathematics students encounter all too often.

About the lesson

Students learn in a variety of ways, and what works for one student may not suit another. My tutoring approach is therefore, firstly, to understand the specific learning needs of a student and, secondly, to articulate the applicable mathematical concepts and methods in a variety of ways to suit the individual’s learning style. Via my time as a tutor, I have developed clear and efficient communication skills by building a rapport with students, thereby allowing me to then convey different techniques for approaching mathematical problems. This enables students to choose what works for them, thereby improving their confidence to tackle further mathematical problems independently in the way they feel most comfortable. I offer mathematics tuition for Primary, Secondary, GCSE and A-Level. Nominally, lessons last for one hour. However, I’m happy to conduct longer sessions if students feel it would be beneficial to their specific needs and/or time constraints. Study sessions are geared to tackling the areas of knowledge weakness that the student feels they need support with. To assist the learning process, I can provide suitable resources, or am equally happy to focus study on mathematical problems provided by the student themselves (e.g. set homework, past exam papers, etc.). The beginning of each lesson will usually start with ‘refresh’ questions relating to the content covered in the previous session, in order to ensure that the lessons are successfully implanting knowledge and, hence, providing real benefit to the student.
