My teaching method is a combination of everything I've learnt over the course of my career- I like to pinpoint the weakest areas of a student and implement strategies, techniques and true understanding of topics to completely reverse their weaknesses. I've noticed that the teaching style in schools nowadays has over simplified certain topics and so when the student is confronted with applying what they have learnt, the 'trick' taught in lesson is too difficult to transfer to a new set of parameters in a brand new question. I prefer to teach my students the reality of what the question is asking and what the 'trick' is actually achieving from a mathematical perspective. This way, the student knows how and when to apply specific methods and ultimately equipping them with the mindset to answer any question thrown at them. This approach could have been developed over the course of my Maths degree, as I have come to appreciate Mathematics and find it a shame that Maths has been watered down in recent years. I always tailor my approach dependent on the student and their ability. If the student is struggling, I will work on the fundamentals to ensure they have a grasp of the topic so that they can apply what they've learnt on the homework I set (and yes, I set homework). Whereas if the student is excelling, I will push them and occasionally go beyond the syllabus (more difficult questions) to outclass them from their peers. I would begin the lesson, examining the homework I had set my student as I believe, independent learning is perhaps the most important time for a student. After clarifying and explaining any questions they could not answer, we would move on to the next lesson. I would test the student's knowledge on the topic and then set them an appropriate list of questions from the many resources I have available. Before doing so, I would walk them through an example and answer any questions they may have. Finally, I would let them tackle the questions examining how they approach each one. Furthermore, I have an outhouse which I've made into a 'mini-classroom'. It has heating for the cold days and windows for the hot. I've installed a whiteboard and have an assortment of resources and materials to help my students have the opportunity to test what they've been taught. I've simulated the classroom environment to ensure that my students treat their time with me seriously and to give me their undivided attention. At the moment, I would like to tutor at GCSE level but will eventually open the doors to A-level.
