About Hilary

My name is Hilary Mbungai Bime, and I am a mathematics teacher and tutor. I teach mathematics because I believe it is not just a school subject, but a powerful tool for logical thinking, problem-solving, and understanding the world around us.
I chose to teach mathematics because I have seen how many students struggle with it—not because they are incapable, but because the subject is often taught in a way that feels confusing or intimidating. My goal is to change that experience by making mathematics clear, structured, and accessible to every learner.
I enjoy helping students move from fear to confidence, from confusion to understanding. Teaching mathematics allows me to guide students step by step, help them discover patterns, and show them that they are capable of succeeding through effort and understanding.
For me, teaching mathematics is about building confidence, discipline, and critical thinking skills that students can use not only in examinations, but throughout their lives.

About the lesson

My approach to mathematics is student-centred, practical, and progressive. I believe that mathematics is not about memorising formulas but about understanding ideas and learning how to think logically.
I begin by diagnosing the learner’s level, identifying gaps in foundational knowledge, and understanding their learning style. From there, I build concepts step by step, moving from simple ideas to more complex ones, ensuring clarity at each stage.
I place strong emphasis on conceptual understanding before procedures, the use of real-life examples to make abstract ideas meaningful, worked examples followed by guided and independent practice, and the correct use of mathematical language and notation.
Mistakes are treated as learning opportunities rather than failures. I encourage students to ask questions freely and to explain their reasoning, which helps to build confidence and critical thinking skills.
I also adapt my teaching to examination requirements such as the Cameroon GCE, UK curriculum, and other international syllabi, while still ensuring deep understanding rather than rote learning.
My ultimate goal is to help students develop confidence in mathematics, improve problem-solving skills, and achieve academic success while appreciating the usefulness and beauty of mathematics.
