About Heidi

I earned a mathematics PhD from the University of Minnesota in 2017, and have been teaching in university mathematics for 11 years. Between 2017 and 2020, I received extensive training and practice in interactive, student-centered teaching. Beginning in May 2020, I began learning to teach and tutor mathematics online with a multitude of meeting and whiteboard tools, and I had the good fortune to teach students from all over the world.

Outside the university setting, I have continually involved myself in community education over the years by assistant-teaching GED math, creating and hosting online STEM workshops through AmeriCorps for kids in grades 4-12, assisting in middle school science and art classrooms, tour-guiding school groups through two historical sites and a botanical garden, designing and hosting a geology lesson and activity for grades 4-6 at a summer youth camp, and more. And of course, a large portion of my current online tutoring is for K-12 kids outside the university as well.

I consider myself an all-around mathematics educator with deep, rich, and varied experiences. I am well equipped to bring a wealth of tools and perspectives to bear on any problems you present me. I look forward to helping you reach your mathematical goals soon!

About the lesson

I am prepared to tutor all levels of K-12 mathematics as well as standard undergraduate mathematics courses (calculus series, linear algebra, differential equations, introduction to proofs, abstract algebra, real analysis, topology, complex analysis, and number theory).

When a student presents me with problems they need help with, I don’t jump straight into a solution. I always ask my student what their thoughts on the problem are… what their line of thinking was when they attempted the problem for the first time. I always want to know which entry they took into solving the problem, and then I start helping them find their way to a correct solution from there. I guide them gently, checking their comprehension and confidence in the math that I or they are putting down. I ask them frequent questions to prompt key insights from them - not from me - so that by the time we find the solution, they gain a detailed and holistic understanding of the problem, as well as more confidence in their abilities.

I combine serious mathematical chops with a humanistic sympathy and patience and desire to see all of my students succeed and come away happier in mathematics than they were before.

Ms. Heidi has been my AP Calculus tutor as well as my SAT Prep tutor for about a year now. Being a very responsible student and not at all a procrastinator, I scheduled a last-minute session for my last exam of the semester and we spent 3 hours studying together. As expected, I aced my exam! Since then, I've been grasping new materials and concepts with a much better understanding (this is especially helpful since Calculus can be quite challenging). Ms. Heidi is a helpful aid in my education and I highly recommend her!
