About Alan
I am a mathematics graduate student. I do both pure and applied math. I currently do research in PDEs (partial differential equations) and have done research in topology/geometry in the past. I care about the technical and theoretical foundations.
Regarding my experience, I have taught calculus I at the university level in the past. I used to do specialized tutoring in game theory when I was a student in undergrad. My preferred subjects to tutor are linear algebra and differential equations (ODEs and PDEs).
My approach is strictly result oriented. There are no shortcuts or tricks; the most efficient way to learn math is to understand the theory correctly.

My goal is to help develop mathematical intuition. I specialize in a top-down conceptual approach. Instead of memorizing definitions, we'll look at the underlying structures that make everything work.
For example, I teach real analysis from a topology first perspective to make sense of why everything is defined the way it is.
My approach to linear algebra follows the rigorous tradition of Friedberg and Hoffman & Kunze. Instead of focusing on computations, I prioritize the study of vector spaces, linear transformations, and dual spaces.
I try to be as detailed as I can, even with basic subjects from high school. This ensures you build proper understanding that won't break down when you reach higher-level coursework.

Please note for more advanced subjects, i.e., real analysis, group theory, etc. I charge slightly more since it is a more specialized topic ($55/hr).
