About Stephen

When I left my last job to move schools, one of my colleagues described me thus: "He knows a lot about a lot." That was pretty flattering (You have to be nice about people in leaving speeches), but does reflect that fact that I do like to explore lots of different things.

I have experience teaching in schools in the in the following areas:
- A-level English Literature.
- A-level History.
- GCSE English Literature and Language.
- GCSE History with a range of exam boards.
- Careers support, including personal statement advice, presentation skills, interview preparation and pathways advice. I have a proven track record of supporting students in successful applications to highly competitive courses such as medicine, dentistry and Oxford and Cambridge universities.

My personal interests are in multidisciplinary studies - particularly the intersections between the arts, sciences and philosophy. I have experience in creating bespoke lesson schemes exploring broad themes through the lens of diverse disciplines and am happy to create individual learning plans for those who are simply seeking to broaden their understanding of the world.

Beyond that I also enjoy writing poetry, songs and music, and running just often enough to be frustrated by a consistently disappointing Parkrun PB.

About the lesson

My approach to teaching is reciprocal. I firmly believe that the pupil thrives when fully engaged and committed to improvement. The best results are achieved together. I enjoy helping students to discover their interests and skills while providing carefully designed lessons based on proven pedagogical principles.

I am happy to help prepare students for public examinations in GCSE and A-level History and English, focusing especially on examination technique, and will be honest with you whenever a topic is outside my experience or expertise.

Lessons are typically 45 mins in duration to allow for maximum concentration, though I'm open to be flexible on this.
