About Colby

I am a current M.S. student in Computer Science at Brown University and hold an A.B. in Computer Science from Brown as well. My academic focus spans computer systems, applied cryptography, distributed systems, and advanced mathematics, and I have complemented my coursework with industry experience designing and analyzing secure protocols in production environments. This combination of formal training and real-world application allows me to teach both the underlying theory and how it is actually used in practice.

I have several years of teaching experience in both classroom and one-on-one settings. At Brown University, I have served as a teaching assistant for courses including Applied Cryptography, introductory cryptographic systems, deep learning, and modern web and mobile applications, and as a head teaching assistant responsible for guiding other TAs and leading sections. In these roles, I worked with undergraduate and graduate students, typically ages 18–25, helping them understand difficult technical material, complete assignments, and prepare for exams. I have also provided private tutoring in mathematics and computer science, where I tailor explanations to each student’s background and learning style.

My teaching approach emphasizes clarity, intuition, and depth of understanding rather than memorization. I focus on identifying gaps in a student’s mental model, rebuilding concepts from first principles, and connecting abstract ideas to concrete examples. Whether working with students one-on-one or in small groups, my goal is to help them gain confidence and independence in technical problem solving, particularly in advanced computer science, cryptography, and mathematically rigorous subjects.

My approach as a tutor is centered on building a deep and accurate understanding of concepts rather than relying on rote memorization or shortcuts. I begin by identifying what the student already understands and where their mental model breaks down, then rebuild the material from first principles in a way that matches their background. I use clear explanations, guided questioning, worked examples, and gradual increases in difficulty to ensure the student is actively reasoning rather than passively following steps.

A typical lesson starts with a brief discussion of goals and any difficulties from previous work, followed by focused explanation of key ideas and hands-on problem solving. I encourage students to explain their reasoning out loud so misconceptions surface early, and I adapt the pace and depth as we go. I often connect abstract material to practical applications or intuitive analogies to make it stick.

What sets me apart is my combination of advanced academic training and real-world technical experience, which allows me to explain not just how something works, but why it is structured that way. My lessons are best suited for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students in computer science, mathematics, cryptography, systems, and related technical subjects, as well as students preparing for rigorous exams or technical interviews.
