About Maxine

I attended McGill University in the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Initially, I thought I would go into something related to Environmental work, but as my interest in human health grew, I switched my major to Life Sciences where I got to learn more about Biotechnology and Microbiology. I now have the amazing opportunity to do cancer research in my post-graduate degree, where I am doing a thesis on leukemia metabolism. With this, I get to apply my knowledge in Microbiology and primarily Molecular Cell Biology in my day-to-day work.
Outside of academia, I love being active so I train for triathlons. I understand how important it is to be able to excel in school while also having fun outside of school. As a tutor, I want to show you that by studying efficiently, you can easily have both.

About the lesson

When it comes to Biology, I believe the best way to learn the material is to take the time to conceptually understand biological processes. Prioritizing conceptual learning in addition to basic memorization is what sets someone apart from somebody who has only memorized each step of a process.

In a typical lesson plan, I aim to take each topic and convey the material in a simplified, story-like way, explaining the reasoning behind each step/stage of a process. In Biology, especially Cell Biology, it is important to not only memorize each component of a cellular process but also understand the function and responsibility of each component. When there is a strong fundamental understanding, learning new topics in Biology is much less intimidating and stressful for a student.

My lessons are primarily for high school/CEGEP, but I also offer lessons to undergraduate students. As a tutor, I am patient and understanding. I want the best for whoever I teach, and want the student to not only improve on their learning skills, but also for them to enjoy the material they have the opportunity to learn more about.
