About Théo

I am a French student in engineering currently pursuing a double diploma in mathematics at University of Geneva.

More precisely, I am in my second year of Master's, and currently doing my Master's thesis remotely (my girlfriend lives in Cork, so I followed her) on a specific topic of probabilities: critical phenomena.

I have an strong background especially in probabilities and statistics, but I should be able to help you on other fields of maths as well.

These lessons are aimed at students from Junior Cycle to L3 in math.
Depending on age and level, my teaching methods (described below) will be balanced differently.
For university students, do not hesitate to send me your syllabus, so that I can check that I can help you everywhere you need

How I prefer to teach :

During the lessons, the purpose is to look at the different results, and to answer, for each of them, 2 questions :
Where does it come from ?
How can we use it, and to do what ?
To answer these questions, I prefer to explain "with the hands" (giving the main ideas of the proofs) rather than in full details, for 3 reasons :
- 1) Timing : Being sure that every detail has been understood takes a lot of time.
- 2) Understandability : It is way easier to not get lost about the big picture if one is not overloaded with details
- 3) Training : I believe it is far more educational to understand how to "add meat to the skeleton" (here, skeleton stands for the main ideas and the meat for the details) than to learn by heart the entire reasonning.
As the purpose of the lesson is to accompany the mentee in their exploration of the topics, I sometimes give sandbox exercises (see below what this means) that we can examine conjointly during the lesson, but I prefer to limit the number of such solicitations, because I know they can be stressful.

Between the lessons, I like to give the mentee some exercises. These can be divided into 3 categories :
-"Sandbox" exercises :
They are really straightforward exercises (no subtlety, no big computations). Their purpose is to get used to and understand the interest of the tools we just introduced.
-"Scratching" exercises :
These are more "problem solving" exercises. Their purpose is to make feel the limitations of the tools (why can't they work in this case ? what are the best result we can obtain with this tool ? ...)
-"Swotting" exercises :
These are easy/intermediate exercises, their purpose is to train to use the different tools. Sadly, it is the best way to get familiar enough with them in order to be able to zoom back and see the big picture.

I am usually reachable between the lessons if needs be (it is normal to contact me if help is needed on the exercises)

Obviously, this is my favorite way to teach, but the best way to teach is the one adapted to the mentee.

About the length of a lesson I usually find that 1 hour is a bit short, so I would prefer one and a half (or two) hours

Experience :
I did, for one year, volunteer tutoring in math and physics with students at level Leaving Certifivate (the french equivalent anyway).
