About Sarah

I am a Master of Science student specializing in molecular, cellular, and integrative physiology. I have 6 years of tutoring experience over a wide range of ages and subjects and love to help students understand the concepts they are learning. My students often say that I make difficult concepts easy to understand by getting to the root of what is challenging them, and explaining it in simpler terms. This method is extremely beneficial for students because when they understand what they are learning, they are empowered to continue learning.

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

I study molecular and cellular physiology which I was first introduced to as a second year kinesiology student. Learning how cells interact with one another to conduct complex physiological processes was so fascinating to me and got me interested in research.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

The part of physiology I am most passionate about is studying what is going wrong with physiology in various diseases. Once you understand what is supposed to happen, you can investigate what is not functioning properly and what is causing the symptoms we see. This is why I am passionate about research in chronic diseases and the development of life saving treatments for them.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

I love helping students understand the content that they are learning. When students leave our meetings feeling excited that they finally understand something that has been tricky for them, it makes me so happy to see their pride and enthusiasm for learning more.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

I wouldn't say I have one particular teacher that inspired me but I know that I learn best from teachers who make their classes interesting and fun and that's what I aim to do in all of my tutoring sessions
  • What are your keys to success?

    1. Understand the big picture before getting into the details - So often I see students confused and/or frustrated that they can't understand some kind of detailed pathway or equation. When I encourage them to take a step back and first understand what they are looking at and why it is relevant, it becomes less intimidating and they can start to add the details in layers. This works so much better than just memorizing things you don't understand and is significantly less dreadful

    2. Make things simple - A lot of what we learn in science are variations of a similar pattern or build upon another concept that we already know. If you can understand the pattern, it becomes much easier to tailor the little details to the specific topic you are studying and then you can learn things quicker and easier

    3. Find the study habit that works for you - Everyone learns differently and what works for someone else might not work for you. The good news is there are so many ways we can look at a course concept; pictures, words, drawing it out, flow charts, flash cards, analogies and so many other methods are all our friends and we'll find the one that helps you learn the best
